What is Private Domain Registration?
Private Domain Registration enables you to keep your personal details private when registering a domain name.
Why Use Private Domain Registration?
Without private registration, personal details such as your name, email address, home address and phone number are available to the general public. They can find these details using a typical "whois" search on your domain name.
Unfortunately, this enables spammers, direct marketers, identity thieves, or other attackers to loot the directory for personal information.
But when you use Private Domain Registration, a "Whois" search will simply display "Domains by Proxy" under the "Registrant" section. In other words, your private details will remain just that - private!
Why are my Details Available to the Public (without private registration)?
The Internet Coalition for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires that the mailing address, phone number and e-mail address of all domain name registrants are made publicly available through the "WHOIS" directories. It doesn't matter who you register your domain name through, you are still required to supply these details.
With a private registration, you still supply these details, however, they will be locked away. With a private registration, "Domains by Proxy" will appear as the registrant (instead of your private details).
